The Lyttelton II
The Lyttelton II was entirely steam driven. The two big boilers provided steam to operate the main propulsion engines but also the engines powering the rest of the functions of the ship. The ship builder made the main engines but bought in the rest of the pumps and engines In all there were 17 steam engines and pumps all of which are on display.
The restoration team have restored an old vertical boiler to provide a limited steam supply and are piping up the engines so that they can be seen operating on steam. On the last Sunday of the month and over the rally weekend the engines can be seen in operation.

The two main engines are 625 indicated horse power triple expansion engines manufactured by the builders of the tug Loebnitz & Co, Renfrew, Scotland. The cylinders are 14” 23” & 38” bores x 27” stroke)
Lyttelton II was equipped with two boilers. These were three furnace Scotch Marine wet-backs manufactured by Barclay & Curle and Co. They were coal fired with Hotchkiss recirculators. Their working pressure was 180psi.
The exhaust steam from all the engines exhausted into a condenser where it was condensed and the water reused in the boilers. Sea water was sucked abord and passed through a large number of tubes in the condenser to cool the steam then emptied back into the ocean.
The condenser operated at a vacuum pressure which enhanced the efficiency of the engines. The vacuum resulted from the condensing of the steam but could be reduced by any air getting trapped in the system.
The Weir feed pump system has two 6″ pumps each with a capacity of 22,000 lbs per hour. The pumps sit on top of the hot well containing condensate water from the air pumps.
Salt water was reticulated around the tug by a Dawson and Downie 7” double acting duplex
The bilges were pumped out with a Dawson & Downie 5” vertical pump
Fresh water was reticulated around the tug from the fresh water tanks on deck by a pump Dawson & Downie 3” pump.
Electricity for lighting etc. was generated using a Sisson generating Set – Engine Sisson 3” x 5½“ -generator 230 volt 27 A 6kW
Up on deck a Clark Chapman windlass was used
The tug had power steering courtesy of a MacGregors Steering Engine. The engine was in the engine room with rods linking it to the wheel on the deck.
Two of these were on deck for use in the tug’s fire fighting duties. – Drysdale Weir 7” 1000 gallons per minute driven by steam turbine 126 BHP
